Butuan is a penal place for living. During sunny days, the city radiates like hell. Transportations fares are high. Traffic is rampant on school days. In spite of theses bad features, having been raised in Butuan, I consider it like haven.
Unlike most of the cities in the Northern regions of Mindanao, Butuan is cleaner and is well-established. The city is well-kept. Having lived at the heart of the city, I am a witness to the diligent metro aids cleaning the roads at dawn. Also, highways have islands decorated with Indian trees at the center to separate lanes and reduce car accidents. Likewise, the city is designed to provide good access for people to any destinations. As a matter of fact, our small store is located in front of a hospital and is surrounded by schools, bank outlets, cinemas, super marts, bakeries and other establishments all just a few meters away. You could even walk yourself to the cemetery when you die!
Second, the safety and peacefulness in the city keep my heart at ease in Butuan. Compared to other towns in Mindanao, my hometown has lesser crime rates. Even if you walk with all your shining jewelries, not a single thief will harass you. Also, the policemen in Butuan have always been active. With them roaming around, you could freely take long walks at night and enjoy the dark starry sky.
Third, the entertainment in Butuan keeps its people alive and jolly. Bars along the National highway are rampant and are active. Instead of the cool breeze, laughs and singings can be heard at night. Also, eateries along the streets open at sunset along with barbecue stands. During this time of the day, people rush to the city. It has always been like this at my hometown; the darker it gets, the louder it becomes.
For some, Butuan isn’t much of a place to stay in. Yet, for out goers and partyphiles, it is the best place to hang-out. It is a peaceful haven polished with cleanliness and entertainment. For the many of the Butuanons, Butuan has never been like hell but a perfect place to enjoy life.
